ISCI (International Society for Child Indicators) 2017

On June 29, 2017, Lauren Pisani attended the ISCI conference in Montreal, Canada representing the staff of IDELA. Below is the summary of the session at the conference.

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #4, endorsed in 2015, focuses on education for all children and identifies a target to reach: “By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have children’s access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education (Target 4.2)”. Consequently, there is a growing body of efforts around the measurement of early child development and learning at a population level globally, regionally and nationally. The emphasis of these efforts are on developing measures that are not limited to a single age or aspect of development, but rather fostering a holistic approach. The tool development process is challenging for a number of reasons, including the broad age range of interest, large range of skills identified, and diversity in children’s early learning environments around the world. This panel provided an update on five population measures of child development: the EDI, MELQO, WHO 0-3, eHCI and IDELA. Presentations included most recent applications and use, lessons from local adaptations, and reliability and validity results.
