Monitoring Results from an ECE Program in Sierra Leone

This data set includes data from 92 children in Rising Academies Early Childhood Education (ECE) classes in Sierra Leone. The average age of children was 3.7 years old. Data was collected in September and October of 2017 as part of a child-outcome monitoring project. The full IDELA instrument was not used, but data was collected on the Motor, Emergent Literacy, and Emergent Numeracy Domains.

On average, children scored 43% correct on this version of the IDELA assessment (which did not include the Social-Emotional Domain).

Distribution of total IDELA scores

The distribution of IDELA scores reveals that while some children demonstrated mastery of the skills, more than half scored below 50% correct.

Distribution of children’s ages

Most children were 3 to 5 years old.

Average IDELA scores by child’s age

On average, one additional year was associated with an additional 12.4 percentage points on IDELA Total score.

Distribution of children’s gender

A majority (57%) of children in the sample were girls. Girls and boys did not differ in their IDELA Total scores.
